My Secret Buffalo Berry Patch

Yesterday as I drove home from my teaching day at a Hutterite Colony I had an inquisitive mind. I was intrigued by mounds of soil just off the roadway. Driving in to inspect I found it was a gravel pit. Across the fence were brilliant berries. I have heard so much of buffalo berries and I was sure I had found them. Without buckets I was not able to harvest them. Now I know where they are. Next year I will pick my fill.

These make an amazing jelly. They also remind me of sea buckthorn.

    1. They do don't they. I didn't see a lot of thorns which is a good thing. Often there are a lot of thorns on these branches.

  2. The berries are really very pretty. I'll bet you will have a bucket or basket in your car trunk from now on!

    1. Good idea, Marjie. I'll add that to my emergency safety kit... 2 buckets.

  3. I've never heard of these, Sarah. How do you find such treasures, and better yet, how do you know you can eat them?

I always worry I'll find a batch of poison berries! PS last week I tried 3 times to leave a message but it wouldn't let me -- so frustrating...

  4. Deana, so nice to hear from you. Sorry about the problems. I have had that problem on others blogs as well, so frustrating. Well, I am very careful about berries and foraging. I ask the locals a lot and trust a lot. Googling is a big resource. So happy to finally find a cache of these berries.
